3D Dental Cone Beam CT Scans: What Patients Need to Know

If you need dental x-rays, 3D dental cone beam CT may be a good option for you. Cone beam imaging in dentistry is a technology that is transforming the way modern dental practices gather information about their patients’ oral health.

This groundbreaking panoramic dental x-ray technology also offers a better clinical experience for patients than traditional x-ray methods. Dental cone beam 3D x-rays can help our Columbus dentists quickly and easily diagnose or treat a variety of dental issues; whether your have TMJ problems, impacted teeth, or need a dental implant.

Dental Cone Beam Imaging vs. Traditional Dental X-Rays

Dental Cone Beam X-Ray
Traditional dental x-rays are more invasive and can be uncomfortable for patients. But 3D cone beam imaging is an incredible dental technology that enhances your comfort level, all while allowing our dentists to see your oral and facial anatomy with more clarity. The x-ray beam on the machine is so focused that it reduces scatter radiation to allow us to see better images or your mouth and teeth all while offering low doses of radiation. In fact, the 3D dental cone beam reduces your radiation exposure time to just a few seconds of low-dose radiation.

What is a Dental Cone Beam CT?

Dental cone beam computed tomography (CT), also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), is a type of dental x-ray equipment that takes panoramic 3D images of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and nerve pathways in a single scan. The 3D images help our dentists at Capstone Dental diagnose problem areas more efficiently.

Dental Uses of Cone Beam Imaging

Dental cone beam 3D images allow our dentists to give you a better diagnosis, and help us prepare for a variety of dental procedures. Common dental uses of cone beam imaging include:

  • Quick and accurate placement of dental implants. Our dentists can perform this procedure from start to finish right here in our office!
  • Planning for tooth extractions.
  • Diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
  • Quick and thorough evaluation of your jaw, sinuses, and nasal cavity.

  • Locating tooth and mouth pain.
  • Planning certain reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Cone Beam CT scan analysis can be used in detecting and evaluating possible or unforeseen patient problems for your patients, thanks to accurate measurements of bone and jaw deformities. This allows you to assess bone lesions and changes of the jaw and detect cysts, tumours, and disease.
